Vodka Bears

87 sleeps to xmas

And I still haven’t started making things yet. Some of the things I plan to make will take some time, especially if wool is involved.

Last year I decided that rather than inflict Boots smellies on friends and family, who hadn’t made specific requests, that I would force them all to suffer through my home-made gifts.

They were primarily alcohol and crochet related.

  1. Toffee Vodka   ( Werthers originals )
  2. Cranberry Gin ( Craisins & fresh Cranberries )
  3. Red Hots Vodka ( Experimental Cinnamon flavoured. Very Sticky )
  4. Dressing up things for small people ( aprons, shopping bags, fluffy skirts )
  5. Various Crocheted things. fingerless mittens. hats. mug copies
  6. Vodka Bears

Out of those things, the cranberry gin, toffee vodka, and Vodka Gummy bears were the most popular.

I am now searching Pinterest with interest to determine whats popular this year, wondering where to get Sloe berries ( for the gin ). Also Ikea have some new baby glass jars and 500ml pop top bottles, so I can make smaller amounts, rather than forcing someone to drink a litre of sticky, sickly toffee vodka out of politeness.

Making the vodka gummy bears is the best part, as they swell to abnormal sizes!

The least fun part is sliding 3-4 bottles of vodka in with the weekly shop for a few weeks in a row. I wonder if i can buy it anonymously, in bulk, off the internet?

I’ve done hats and mittens to death with the Crochet. So. this year its those Scarf things that are like huge big collars that fasten with buttons. Probably.

Pile of books

Bookbinding

In the interests of adding to my notebook hoard, today I attended “An introduction to bookbinding” at leeds college of art with Nephew A( after much dropping of hints ), and spent several hours learning the basics of making hardbacks and paperback books, different types of folding and stitching paper together. It was a class of 9 with students having varying levels of experience ( me = none ) ( one chap who’d been in professional trade for a long time).

I took the pictures when I got home, because there was glue EVERYWHERE, and I was way too busy to stop and take progress photo’s although I would have liked to. All fingers still present and correct, despite the fact that there were sharp knives!

Nephew B is also planning an etsy business. I’m not sure on the details, but I think I get to be his financial backer, and he gets all the profits. Work still in progress….

I’ve committed Haiku

A week ago at work, I attended an optional course about using consistent, audience appropriate language for my work related written communications. It was a “webinar” type thing, looking at language, favourite words, and the tone and word choice used by different companies.  ( this was optional – I wasn’t pulled up for starting all my emails as “Wotcher mister” )

It did make me think about how and when to use words, and its helped a lot with making the stuff I write down more direct ( not here. Here i ramble on  and no one can stop me! ) and one of the exercises was to condense a page wall of text into a haiku form. And I really, really enjoyed it – although after discussion, i have to submit my weekly reports in full paragraphs.

Shame that!

I’m kind of fond of poetry anyway, especially the stream of consciousness styles of e.e.cummings, for example. Not so much Philip Larkin – although that dislike could be the result of an english lit. a-level.

So I thought, for fun, I’d write a haiku every day about whatever had been the topic of the day for me. This is having a postive effect on reminding me to check my blooming twitter account, and also really confusing sis B.

So – this is my week in Haiku  in 5-7-5 syllables, discounting traditional imagery.

  • Thursday :Re-Writing emails / with smiley face diagrams / and very short words
  • Friday : Tongue in teeth, drawing / Kohl lines without my glasses / Epic Liner Fail
  • Saturday : nose inside a book / Reading and forgetting that / coffee cools quite fast
  • Sunday: sun. blue sky. white clouds / Outside breathing dragon smoke / Brass monkey weather
  • Monday:fat white flakes falling / On animated app screen / truth reveals blue sky
  • Tuesday:Two hour traffic jam / motorway juddered to beeping halt / where is my exit?
  • Wednesday: Today my ears popped / Sinuses are seemingly / filled with snot and lead

I’ll see how long I can keep it up 🙂

HouseKeeping…

Not actual housekeeping. Heck no. That would involve pledge and dusters and the dyson, and too many flights of stairs.

I’m not saying I shouldn’t tidy up, but I came to sit at my desk to start cleaning it, in order to move it closer to the radiator to keep my toes warm when at sewing machine or computer, and just shifted the teetering heap to one side, put warm socks on instead and fired up the iMac. ( I refer you to http://20px.com/blog/2013/09/06/a-field-guide-to-procrastinators and invite you to guess which sort )

So, this is virtual housekeeping ( except I already logged into wow, did my auctions, collected my resources and did my garrison missions. FarmVille with orcs.  So not that sort of virtual ), in which i get rid of a load of old wordpress plugins & pages that I dont want, delete a pile of themes i installed on a whim, revert back to one I actually like because its fluid ( and try updating my social stream plugin – which is only co-operating for twitter at the moment, which is super annoying… that means I have to read documentation!

End of Q4: Status Report

2014 and i havent gotten any taller. That means I don’t have to grow up anytime soon as far as I’m comcerned.

Nephews A & B are both taller than me now.

Not that they make an effort to point it out on a regular basis, or casually mention t-shirts, banners, advertisements, just in case I didnt notice. Did I mention they are also known as Evil 1&2?

I met up with my cousins on my Dad’s side this weekend, for the first time in 25 years. Baby J is a foot and half taller than me, and Little A has just had baby number 2 , and is no longer “the short one”.

I got my vengeance by inflicting a crochet Yoda hat on her newborn. Or a Shrek Yoga hat, according to her eldest.

I blame the woolvalanche

Okay, so I might have taken up crochet again. A bit. I might have finished the epic pink blanket, and the stripey blanket, and half a dozen pairs of fingerless gloves and be halfway through the rest of the blankets and
I keep bringing wool home, and theres a bit of a pile…..
